Swedish police say motive for deadly school attack still unclear after student arrested

The motive of the Swedish high school student who was arrested for killing two teachers in Malmo’s southern city on Monday, was not known to police, according to the Malmo police chief.

The 18-year old was accused of killing two women in their 50s in Malmo’s school. According to police, around 50 students were present at the school during the attack. However, no one else was injured.

Petra Stenkula, Malmo’s chief police officer, said that she didn’t know of any evidence suggesting that the attack was motivated either by racism or religious extremism.

“I haven’t heard of anything similar right now. She said that it was too soon to comment on the matter, but she agreed with her colleague at a news conference.

The Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet reported Tuesday that the student had attacked the women using a knife, and an axe. It did not identify its sources.

On Tuesday, Magdalena Andersson, Prime Minister of Sweden, told Swedish news agency TT that she received the news with “grief” and that her thoughts were with victims’ families.
