Saniya Mistri: The hijab-wearing teen rapper breaking stereotypes

Saniya Mistri, 15, grew up in Mumbai, India’s financial capital. She often wondered about her life and how it differed from the lives of those who lived in the more affluent parts of the city.

Saniya, whose rapper name was Saniya MQ, grew up in a densely populated area in Mumbai’s eastern half.

At a young age, she began to write poetry. Her friends introduced her to rapping shortly thereafter. They help her record and shoot the songs.

Saniya currently has approximately 10,000 YouTube subscribers. Songs that express frustration at poverty and systemic inequalities have earned her much praise and admiration.
