'We hope for the best, son' – War nears Ukraine maternity ward

Pokrovsk Perinatal Centre, the last specialist ward under Ukrainian control in eastern Donbas is located.

The centre is approximately 40km (25 mi) away from the nearest frontline and has had to deliver babies during shelling throughout World War II.

Pregnant mothers say they worry about where to give birth. Doctors have noticed an increase in premature births with 16.5% of Pokrovsk babies being born prematurely since February 24, 2003.

This compares to a 9% average in Ukraine.
