EU’s chief executive heads to Azerbaijan in search of gas deal

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen attends the official welcome to the G7 leaders summit at Bavaria’s Schloss Elmau castle, near Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany 26 June, 2022.

The European Commission’s President Ursula von der Leyen will be visiting Baku Monday in search of more natural gas from Azerbaijan. This is part of the European Union’s efforts to reduce Russia’s dependence on energy.

Twitter statement by the Commission: Diversification of EU energy imports is a priority given Russia’s ongoing militarization of its energy supplies. “President von der Leyen will meet tomorrow in Azerbaijan (with (Energy Commissioner Kadri] Simson) to strengthen the cooperation.”

A draft document Reuters reviewed on July 14th shows that the Commission offered to EU countries a deal for increased natural gas imports as well as support for the expansion of a pipeline.

The Commission was not available for comment immediately. The EU countries have already reached an accord to a gradual oil embargo on Russia.

In the meantime, Russian gas transit through Poland was rescheduled for this year. Moscow’s invasion in Ukraine on February 24, 2014 also affected gas shipments through Ukraine.

Germany, the fourth-largest economy in the world is ready to deal with any situation. This includes a total halt to Russian gas supplies even if a 10-day maintenance period of the huge Nord Stream 1 pipeline is completed later in the week.

Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia’s ambassador in Vienna, tweeted Sunday that Russia has never denied Europe natural gas supplies. He also fully complied with his contractual obligations.
