Authorities said that a couple of elderly people were trapped in a burning vehicle as they attempted to flee a wildfire that had erupted in the Portuguese municipality of Murca.
Mario Artur Lopes (Murca’s mayor) said that the bodies were found around 4.30 p.m., after the couple had been involved in a car accident while trying to escape the wildfire.
Lopes stated that the car was completely charred and that the couple had died in the vehicle. “It’s a very dramatic situation in Murca… More than half the municipality is on fire.”
He added, “Resources are not sufficient.”
Lusa news agency cited the mayor and stated that the couple was over 80 years old.
After a pilot from Portugal died in a waterbomber accident, the aircraft was battling a wildfire in Torre de Moncorvo, the couple is now dead.
Murca’s wildfire is just one of nine that are sweeping across Portugal, which has been suffering from a heatwave for the past week. Other southern European countries, such as Spain, are also being impacted by blazes.
