The newborns fighting for survival in Afghanistan

Local doctors claim that the number of miscarriages and newborn deaths in Badakhshan has nearly doubled in a year under Taliban rule.

In August 2013, foreign funding that had been used to finance Afghanistan’s public health care system was stopped. Yogita Limaye, our correspondent, has seen the unimaginable suffering of pregnant women in Afghanistan’s maternity wards. She witnessed their pain and was forced to share beds with them. There is also a severe shortage of doctors.

Some babies are surviving despite all this. Tragically, many others are not.
