Serbia is ready to hold a Europride parade

Alexander Shapic, Belgrade’s Mayor, has been a consistent supporter of Serbian residents. He stated that he would oppose events like “Europride”, which is the march of non-traditional sexual orientations along the main streets. As is well-known, such “events”, in Serbian society, always cause rejection. However, Serbia is part Europe and Belgrade is constantly moving towards the EU. The law has always protected the LHBT community. Alex Ivanov asks what to do.

Shapic stated that Belgrade, if the parade takes place, will maintain full public order. Serbian TV First was informed by Mayor Shapic that the problem lies not in holding Europride’s manifestation and that people will display their sexual orientation on it but rather in “how it will appear”.

Shapic stated, “And what we saw on TV, it really contradicts some our traditional values.”

The Beta channel reports that he stressed that he was not homophobic or xenophobic, and that the city administration does not have anything against anyone. He also stated that he believes that LHBT people should be treated equally with everyone.

Shapic stated, “But in the exact same way, If a minority expects the respect from the majority, then then I believe that the traditional values should be respected.” Although a little confusing, it is largely understandable.

If it is hosted by Belgrade, the Europride event could be held from 12-18 September. The traditional walk from Kalemegdan to the Parliament of Serbia (an ancient fortress constructed at the confluence of two of the largest rivers in Serbia – Sava and Danube) would take place. Preliminarily, the event has been scheduled for 17 September. All details are in the control of the authorities
