Russia reports 50,000 COVID-19 cases for second day running – Reuters

An ambulance is seen outside the hospital for coronavirus-infected patients (COVID-19), on the outskirts Moscow, Russia, 1 February, 2022.

Russia has recorded more than 50,000 daily COVID-19 infections for the second consecutive day, according to the coronavirus taskforce of the government.

In Russia, 51,699 cases have been detected in the past 24 hours – the highest number of cases since 9 March.

Russia’s caseload surpassed 50,000 for the first time in nearly six months on Friday (2 September).

As new, highly transmissible coronavirus variants spread across the country, infections rose in July/August.

According to the task force, 92 people died from COVID-19 in the past 24 hours.

Excess fatality statistics show that Russia is among the worst-affected countries in the pandemic. The government has not been able to quickly vaccinate the country and they are reluctant to impose any restrictions beyond 2020.
