Kazakhstan battles huge wildfire in northern forest

Massive wildfire rages across 106,000 acres (428 km2) of forest in Kazakhstan’s northern Kostanay Province. Hundreds of people have been evacuated, the Central Asian nation’s Emergencies Ministry stated Monday (5 September)

According to the ministry, the fire began on Saturday (3 September) and spread quickly due to strong winds and hot weather. It said that eleven people were injured and one was killed by the fire.

Firefighters were working in the settlement of Amankaragai at the edge of forest to clean hotspots Monday among the wreckage of vehicles and buildings.

A local woman claimed that her children were taken to hospital after inhaling smoke.

“How did it all come about?” She said that first there were dark clouds and then there was a fire. “We fled and that was it. I am in shock and I cannot speak.

Since last month, wildfires have been raging in Russia’s neighboring regions due to the prolonged heatwave.
