Blinken says Ukraine has made ‘significant progress’ in counteroffensive

Antony Blinken, US Secretary of State (pictured Monday 12 September), stated that although it was early days for Ukraine’s counteroffensive to the Russian military, “significant progress” has been made by Ukrainian forces.

Blinken was in Mexico to discuss economic negotiations and was asked about his opinion on recent developments in Ukraine.

After Moscow’s surrender in northeastern Ukraine on Saturday, the worst defeat of the war since its beginnings, the Ukrainian forces have retaken dozens of cities.

Blinken stated that the “what they have done was very methodically planned and of course it’s benefited greatly from significant support by the United States (and many other countries) in terms of making certain that Ukraine has the equipment it requires to prosecute the counteroffensive,” during a Mexico City news conference.

Blinken stated that the Ukraine conflict would continue as Russia has significant forces and arms in Ukraine, which it is still using “indiscriminately”, against civilians and infrastructure.

“Russia committed this aggression. He said that Russia should pay the price for its aggression.

Blinken said that Iran’s response on the European Union’s proposal to revive the 2015 nuclear agreement makes it unlikely that an agreement will be reached in the near future.

“I cannot give you a time frame except to reiterate that Iran seems unwilling or unable do what is required to reach an agreement.”
