Ukraine’s Zelenskiy speaks with IMF chief – sources

IMF Director Kristalina Georgieva speaks at a conference on economic solidarity hosted by the Vatican. It took place at the Vatican on 5 February 2020.

The Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zeleskiy spoke to Kristalina Georgieva, International Monetary Fund’s Managing Director, on Tuesday (13 Sept). Two sources familiar with the matter said that the Ukrainian government continues to push the international lender for a full-fledged funding program.

Officials from Ukraine have stated that they seek an IMF program in the range of $15 billion to $20bn. However, such a large amount is unlikely to be approved by IMF.

At an informal meeting on Monday, the IMF Executive Board discussed a plan to offer Ukraine $1.4bn emergency assistance through the IMF Rapid Financing Tool.
