Kosovo says it foiled plot to assassinate prime minister in 2021

Kosovo’s government said Monday (19 September) that it foiled a plot by Albin Kurti to assassinate the prime minster in 2021. This partially confirms a report from an Albanian television station.

The government stated that Kurti was informed by Kosovo’s intelligence agency at the time.

It stated that Albin Kurti, the prime minister, was notified by the Kosovo Intelligence Agency of the issue in 2021 and security institutions took all necessary measures to stop it.

It stated that the case was not made public to prevent panic.

The statement didn’t provide any additional details.

Tirana’s television station A2 reported Monday that it had obtained information from Iranian hackers about the plot.

A2 reports that this was a notice sent by Kosovo police to its Albanian counterparts. It stated that an Albanian citizen planned to assassinate Kosovo’s prime minister, a lawmaker, and another person in order to “destabilize the country”.

It was impossible to reach the police in Kosovo and Albania for comment.

A2 claimed that the information was leaked in connection with recent cyberattacks against Albania, which Tirana accuses of being carried out by Iran.

In July, a cyberattack caused temporary disruption to government websites and other public services. This prompted Albania to cut all relations with Iran and order Iranian diplomats and staff to leave within 24hrs.
