In Moldova’s capital, thousands call for government’s resignation

Many people marched in the capital of Moldova on Sunday, 25 September to protest the government that is pro-Western. This was amid growing anger at spiralling natural gas prices.

This small, eastern European country, located between Ukraine and Romania has seen tensions rise as gas prices have soared following Russia’s invasion.

Reporter saw thousands of protestors outside the official residence of the Moldovan president in central Chisinau. They chanted slogans such as “down with (President] Maia Sandu”) and “down avec the government”.


Sandu has repeatedly condemned Moscow’s actions in Ukraine, and is pushing for EU membership. Critics claim that she should have reached a better deal with Russia, Moldova’s main supplier of gas.

Friday, 23 September: The prices of gas in Moldova by was raised by 27% for households.

Protesters had set up around 10 tents outside the residence in the afternoon. This was following an attempt to establish a protest camp near Moldova’s parliament last Wednesday.
