Ukraine says it recaptured 1,200 sq km of Kherson region in ongoing counteroffensive

Ukraine retook more than 1,170 kms (450 miles), of land in southern Kherson since it launched its counter-assault against Russia in late August. A military spokesperson stated on Sunday (9/10/10).

While Ukraine’s offensive in North-East was successful, efforts to eliminate Russian influence on the West bank of the Dnipro River’s vast Dnipro River have been slow and laborious.

Natalia Humeniuk spoke for the Southern military command. She stated that Ukraine was making progress on Kherson front, but that it still had a lot of work to secure newly retaken territory.

She stated that: “Work continues to consolidate territory, clearing it, as well as conducting stabilising operations.”

Humeniuk stated that “as of today”, more than 1,170 kilometers had been liberated in Kherson direction since the beginning counter-offensive.

Ukrainian officials advocate the importance of capturing Kherson. This is an area of agricultural land that Moscow captured during its initial invasion.

Russia supplies Crimea via its supply lines. The strategically important Crimean peninsula to the south would be at risk if Kherson is forced to retake territory. Since Russia’s occupation in 2014, Kyiv long yearns for its return.
