Liz Truss resigns

Today (20 October) Liz Truss was forced to quit her post as UK Prime Minister. Her 44-day tenure saw her overseeing an economic collapse and causing severe damage to the Conservative party. Senior party leaders told Truss to resign on Thursday morning. This left Tory MPs bitterly divided and facing the possibility of being forced to elect a third prime minster within months.

Sir Graham Brady, the chair of the 1922 committee met Truss today amid speculation among senior Conservatives about Truss’s end to her premiership. According to government insiders, Brady, who oversees the Tory leadership contests was present at Truss’ request in Downing Street.

Truss’s allies claimed that Truss requested the meeting with Truss’s “shop steward”, a Tory MP to “take the temperature of the party” after days of chaos. Jake Berry, Tory chairman and Therese Coffee, deputy prime minister, were seen also entering Downing St. This added to the sense that Truss was facing a crisis. Miriam Cates, a member the 1922 executive committee executive, is one of at least 12 Tory MPs who have called for Truss’ resignation.

She said, “It seems untenable.” “It seems untenable,” she said. Truss’s premiership began September 6. It saw her economic strategy fail and burn, the dismissal of Kwasi Kwarteng, her chancellor, and the forced resignation of Suella Braverman, her home secretary, on Wednesday. Jeremy Hunt, the new chancellor is trying to create a PS40 billion package that includes tax increases and spending cuts in order to plug a fiscal gap ahead of another fiscal statement, which will be issued on 31 October.
