On Tuesday 8 November, 10 people were saved by the Polish Border Guard from a swamp near the border with Belarus. This was in response to Warsaw’s warning about a new migrant crisis at its borders.
Humanitarian crisis was created by a surge in migration from Africa to the Middle East via Belarus between 2021 and 21. The European Union and Poland claimed it was deliberately created by Minsk in order to destabilize the bloc. Belarus repeatedly denied that people could cross the border, and refused to let them fly in.
The war in Ukraine is causing security concerns to rise. Warsaw reported that there has been an increase in migrants crossing the Belarus border. Officials of Poland suspectMinsk might be involved again.
Poland began to build a razor-wire fence at its border with Kaliningrad, in fear that the Russian exclave might become an illegal migration route.
“Today, Border Guard officers, in cooperation with another service, saved 10 foreigners during an extremely difficult operation,” stated the Border Guard in a statement.
“All in all, eight Sri Lankan and one Pakistani citizens were saved.”
The Border Guard reported recently that 100 attempts to illegally cross from Belarus had been reported every day. This is significantly more than the summer levels.
Poland has built a wall at the Belarus border. It is currently installing sensors, cameras.
Anna Michalska is a spokesperson for the Border Guard and stated that she believes that more migrants are trying enter Poland before the electronic system is fully implemented. Crossing the border becomes difficult because of this.
She stated that people and services associated with (Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko) are aware of this fact and will recruit as many foreigners for this trip as possible.
Grupa Granica is a non-governmental organization that helps migrants. Anna Alboth stated that they had received over 1,800 calls since the construction of the wall and that there have been more attempts to cross the border.
