Portugal’s PM right-hand man quits over malfeasance accusation

Miguel Alves was formally accused in malfeasance. He resigned from his position as secretary-general of the state after being formally charged.

Costa appointed Alves secretary of state assistant to the prime minister in two years’ time.

Costa was accused by critics of appointing Alves during an investigation.

On Thursday, the country’s public prosecutors announced that they had officially arrested him.

Costa received a letter from Alves requesting his resignation. He stated that he could not remain in government following being charged by public prosecutors. Costa thanked Alves for his resignation.

Alves claimed that the allegations were based upon events that took place in 2015 and 2016, when Alves was Caminha’s mayor.

Publico reported that the allegations were related to contracts he signed to support a company controlled and owned by another Socialist mayor.

This is part of an ongoing investigation into corruption, abuses of power and leaders in the region.

Publico alleges that Caminha paid EUR300,000.00 in rent to finance construction of an exhibition centre while Alves was in power. The centre is still not constructed.

Alves claimed that he was clear-eyed and convinced of the legality of all his decisions.
