Spanish truckers start new strike over freight rules and cost of living

Monday, 14 November saw a repeat of the strike by truck drivers which brought Spain to a standstill earlier in the year. Many protestors marched through Madrid to demand changes in road freight regulations.

The Platform for the Defence of Transport is protesting the Madrid region’s public health care policy. This also happens 11 days after major Spanish unions held a protest against rising living costs.

Protesters wearing high-visibility vests marched through central Madrid passing Atocha train station, Parliament and waving slogans such as “We don’t want subsidies, we want solutions.”

March-April trucker strike caused Spanish supply chains and food shortages to cease. This led to an inflation flare up which hampered quarterly economic growth.

Platform for the Defence of Transport called Monday’s second open-ended strike to demand changes to road freight regulations in order to protect margins and keep truckers’ prices low.

Local media reported that traffic was flowing as usual Monday morning in critical supply chains in Barcelona’s port, and Madrid’s wholesale food market. Seville is fourth in size in the country.

Truckers finally received a package of EUR1 billion that included a rebate on diesel fuel prices as well as a EUR1,200 cash incentive. They claim that the rebates have been overtaken by rising fuel prices.

Nuria Hernan is the wife of a truck driver and said that many people in transport are bankrupt because they can’t pay their expenses.

The 45-year-old added, “It’s just too expensive to go to work.”
