French authorities rescue 61 migrants including children in Channel

On Tuesday 29 November, French authorities saved 61 migrants (including children) from the English Channel. This was the largest emergency operation in recent months. Many migrants travelled in small boats to the coast of Britain because of the calm seas.

Boulogne rescue workers reported that around 30 migrants were forced to be pulled out of the freezing waters to board a French rescue boat. They had tried to jump onto their rubber dinghy, which was taking in water.

Officials claimed that the rescue took place approximately one nautical mile from British territorial waters.

According to the refugees, the dinghy carried Afghan, Indian, Iranian, and Pakistani citizens. It was reported to have left France at the crack of dawn.

At the quayside, emergency workers distributed blankets and clothing to migrants.

50 migrants tried to cross the Channel from Britain, but were stopped by French police on Tuesday after calm weather.

Guy Allemand, the mayor of Sangatte (a small village close to Calais), was his name. He stated that while some migrants were forced to leave by police, 100 others had crossed open water.

He stated that the methods of migrant trafficking groups have changed in recent years.

He stated that traffickers arrive in “taxi boats” now, and refugees are asked for help to get them out of the water.

This year, more than 40,000 people crossed the Channel to Britain in small boats. This represents an increase of 28,526 persons in 2021. The unusually mild November weather caused the increase in departures.

France and Britain signed the agreement earlier this month to increase their collective efforts to stop illegal immigrants crossing the Channel.
