Police storm abandoned coal mine village occupied by climate activists

German police clashed with protestors in Lutzerath as they tried to stop them from blocking the expansion of a coalmine.

Climate activists blocked the entrance to the Garzweiler open-pit coal mine, in an attempt to stop it from expanding.

Germany claims it requires the lignite that lies beneath the village to meet its energy needs now that Russia is no longer available.
