On Tuesday (10 January), Italy’s rightist Prime Minster Giorgia met Pope Francis and other high-ranking Vatican officials. The Holy See described the meeting in “cordial conversations”.
Meloni was elected in October to head the most right-leaning government of Italy’s postwar history. He is a strong Catholic conservative.
She tweeted that it was an honor and strong emotion to be allowed to speak to the Holy Father on the major issues facing our time.
The 45-year-old politician is opposed to abortion and suspicious about LGBT rights. She also described herself as “a mother”, “an Italian” and “a Christian”.
However, there are possible fault lines between Francis and Pope Francis. Francis supports migrants’ rights loudly, but she also supports hard border policies.
Meloni acknowledged that she did not always understand Pope Francis. This was her 2021 autobiography. Meloni expresses a preference for Pope John Paul II in this autobiography.
Because of his straight talk and big eyes, she said Francis would make a great person to meet.
For 35 minutes, the pair met Ton uesday. Following that, Meloni spoke to Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin and Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the Vatican’s foreign secretary.
“During cordial conversations, Meloni and Parolin talked about “a variety of topics relating Italy’s socio situation”, including poverty and education.
Without going into too much detail, the statement also mentioned Europe and Ukraine.
Meloni, Meloni’s unmarried partner, was a TV journalist and entered the papal meeting wearing black. Their six-year-old daughter was with her.
In keeping with tradition, she and the pope exchanged gifts. Meloni, who is a collector of these items gave Francis an angel statuette.
