ECR Group supports today’s European Parliament proposal to establish an international tribunal to indict those responsible for the crimes of aggression against Ukraine. ECR Foreign Policy Coordinator Anna Fotyga calls for a greater focus on arms and ammunition supply to Ukraine and for justice to be done against the Russian leadership for war crimes, genocide and criminal war of aggression. The MEP stated that the European Parliament agreed to a legal framework in order to ensure justice is done and prevent future wars of aggression on the European continent.
Anna Fotyga stated in the plenary debate: “I am firm, and quite certain.” First, Ukraine must receive arms and ammunition to ensure its victory over the Russian Federation. We must also ensure that all of the perpetrators are held accountable. All crimes – genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity as well as the crime of aggression. This invasion has been called a war on aggression since its inception.
Russia blocks any decisions that could bring it to justice under international law for its war on aggression. The MEPs call for an international agreement with the United Nations General Assembly to establish a tribunal between states that are similar in their views.
This special tribunal would include Russian politicians, leaders and military commanders at high power. They will be tried for war crimes and aggression against Ukraine.
