Parliament calls for more sanctions against Iranian regime

Thursday’s resolution stated that the EU should make further adjustments in its position towards Iran due to the Iranian regime’s disregard for human dignity and democratic aspirations.

MEPs ask the EU to raise its sanctions to include all persons or entities responsible for human rights violations and their families. This includes President Ali Khamenei as well as President Ebrahim Raisi and Prosecutor General Mohammad Jafar Montazeri, Supreme leader Ali Khamenei, all foundations (‘bonyads), that are connected to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

They ask the Council and its member states to add the IRGC and its subsidiary forces, along with the paramilitary Basij militia and the Quds force to the EU terrorist list. Any country in which the IRGC is involved in military, economic, or informational operations should immediately cut all ties.

MEPs demand that the Islamic Republic authorities immediately and unconditionally free all of those who have been condemned. MEPs also condemned the use of death and criminal penalties by the regime to suppress dissent, and punish those who exercise their fundamental freedoms. They demand that hundreds of protestors be executed and held responsible.

Assistance to Russia and repression of diaspora

The MEPs are also deeply concerned by the transnational structural repression of the Islamic Republic authorities. This includes assassinations, espionage, and harassment against the Iranian diaspora within the EU. They call on the EU and its member countries to take stronger steps to protect those affected by such repression.
