Bulgaria destroys mine drifting near its Black Sea coast



According to the defense ministry, the navy of Bulgaria carried out a controlled explosion in order to destroy a floating naval mine near the country’s Black Sea coast.

Mines began floating in the Black Sea after Russia invaded Ukraine on 24 February 2022. Special diving teams from Turkey and Bulgaria have defused mines floating in their waters.

According to the ministry the ministry alerted the navy about a floating object 200m (220 yard) off the Black Sea coast, close Tulenovo, in northeastern Bulgaria.

According to the ministry, it was an “anchored YaM type” and was located in a combat zone. A special dive team destroyed it later that day.

Since the beginning of the war, around 40 mines were destroyed in the Black Sea’s west waters by Turkey and Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, and Ukraine.
