More than 45,000 migrants arrived in New York City last spring. This is more than the number of people who were previously housed in shelters.
The city is requesting the Biden administration help in dealing with the influx of migrants which has overcrowded its homeless shelter system. This led to the mayor declaring an emergency.
Democratic colleagues are calling for President Joe Biden to assist cities and towns that feel the burden. Nada Tawfik, BBC correspondent, visited an organization that provides housing for some of these migrants.
