Kylian Mbappe scored a club-record 201st goal for Paris St-Germain in an entertaining 4-2 win over Nantes.
Although he had to wait until the 92nd, he was able to be clinical and turn to finish left-footed to clear Edinson Cavani at top of the PSG goallist.
France’s forward has become a footballing legend, having turned 24 in December.
Mbappe said, “I play to create history.” He joined the team in 2017 on a loan from Monaco and then a 180m euro move.
“I always wanted to make history in France. In my capital city. That is what I am doing. It is amazing, but there are still many things to do. ”
Mbappe was named captain after the game and said to Canal Plus, “This is special for me as a native Parisian.” I wouldn’t believe it if someone told me that I would beat the record wearing the captain’s armband. ”
The Frenchman won the 2018 World Cup trophy and was awarded the Golden Boot in 2022.
Mbappe also won the 2021 Nations League together with his country. He scored a hat trick in December’s World Cup final defeat to Argentina. France lost on penalties following a 3-3 draw.
Mbappe joined PSG in 2017 from Monaco for a record fee for a teenager. He has won four Ligue 1 titles, and topped the scoring charts for the last four seasons.
The forward has scored 30 goals this season and assisted eight others, bringing his total for the club to 85 in 247 games.
PSG won 2-0 at Parc des Princes. Lionel Messi opened the scoring, Jaouen Hadjam’s goal being his own.
Nantes was able to draw level with the hosts before the half-time break thanks to goals by Ludovic Blas (Ignatius Ganago) and Ignatius Ganago. Gianluigi Donnarumma, PSG goalkeeper, was caught at his near post for the first, and made a mistake that led to the second.
Mbappe crossed to Danilo Pereira, who led the home team back in front at the hour mark. His crowning moment came later in the game.
