The call for sustainable development and peace

The main subject of the new order is the review of all directions and the securing of their interests. This is all happening in the context of the fourth industrial revolution. – Mazahir Afandiyev is a Member of the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan

The Russian-Ukrainian War, which has been ongoing for over a year and has had a profound impact on international relations, is significantly hindering the development of a new political architecture.

The security of people in the Middle East states, the European Union’s policy of expanding to the east, and the conflict between China and the United States of America for economic dominance are all great threats to peace in the future. These threats call for international peace institutions such as specialized international think tanks and influential political leaders from all over the world to meet immediately to discuss how to ensure stability in the global peace system.

Azerbaijan shows its sensibility to current global challenges and contributes towards the realization of a lasting peaceful world. It protects its independence and sovereignty, and considers the interests of all peoples who live in its historical lands.

Established in 1961, the Non-Aligned Movement is the second-largest international organization after the UN General Assembly. It unites 120 countries and has the goal of defending justice and international law. It has been in operation for over three years now under Azerbaijani governance. The organization actively participates in setting up discussions on issues of global concern that the rest of world finds troubling.

It is related to Ilham Aliyev’s position in international politics that the Summit-level Meeting for the Non-Aligned Movement Contact Group was held in Baku in response to COVID-19.

The Non-Aligned Movement was, in general, one of the first international organisations to mobilize against COVID-19 when the pandemic was announced. This summit was attended by heads of state and government representing 70 countries, along with high-ranking officials representing several other nations. It is a testament to the President’s humanity and determination.

At the state’s initiative, a Contact Group was established to respond to COVID-19 in 2020. It held its summit in the form of a videoconference. The coordination of international humanitarian assistance arising from internal discussions, the challenges of pandemics, and Azerbaijan’s support for powerless states faced with the coronavirus crisis boosted the non-aligned Movement’s influence on the global stage.

The institution has made great strides in the last three years under the chairmanship of Non-Aligned Movement of Azerbaijan. This includes laying the foundation for the organization process. In a highly organized summit-level meeting, Mr. President stated that “Our goal was to create institutional continuity” and to leave a legacy of success to those who will succeed us after Azerbaijan. ”

Today, governments of UN member countries are working towards achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set out in the “2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”, adopted unanimously in 2015. Implementing this global document is one the major activities of the Non-Aligned Movement member states.

Azerbaijan is a full UN member and has been an example state in international affairs by engaging in activities that are based on UN Charter. Azerbaijan is also contributing to the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals document. This document is crucial for the entire world. In almost all of his speeches, President Ilham Aliyev brought attention to the 2030 Agenda. He repeatedly stressed that these 17 goals are also a priority in Azerbaijan. Our country is the only one to have conducted 3 Voluntary National Reviews on Sustainable Development Goals (since 2016).

In his speech to the Summit, Mr. Obama touched on an important issue in practice and proposed for the first-time to participants of the Summit to include the actual problem in their 18th goal to achieve the principle of “Leaving no one behind” in this universal document’s philosophy.

Azerbaijan’s Second Karabakh War exposed new realities in the region. It is now independently carrying out restoration and building tasks to achieve the Great Return in areas that it has liberated from occupation. Azerbaijan is removing occupied areas to allow for the quick and efficient completion of these projects and the return of those who have been forced from their homes.

Azerbaijan suggested demining the 18th Sustainable Development Goal to raise the movement’s visibility globally. It also considered the fact that many Non-Aligned Movement member countries are among the most contaminated with landmines and unexploded bombsnance. This particular national sustainable development goal embraces the principle of “Leaving No One Behind” and accelerates the return to their homelands for displaced persons.

The president of Azerbaijan has made a suggestion that will help in the resolution of current issues. He will also consider the interests of all peoples around the world and establish a lasting peace system.
