European Poetry to be enjoyed by Dublin commuters

The European Parliament, European Commission, Poetry Ireland, and Iarnrod have launched a new project titled “Poetry In Motion”. Poetry in Motion, a new initiative launched by the European Parliament, the European Commission, Poetry Ireland and Iarnrod Eireann, will feature 10 poems from poets across Europe on 27 April.

The collection of poetry will be displayed on DART & Commuter Services operating in Greater Dublin Area up until the end August. The collection of poems is part of a celebration of 50 years since Ireland joined what is now known as the EU.

Frances Fitzgerald, MEP and speaker at the launch of Connolly Station in Dublin’s, said

In celebrating the 50th anniversary Ireland’s EU membership, it is important that we acknowledge the cultural impact of our membership on Ireland and the arts in particular. This series of poems reflects the richness and diversity of our literature, which has been brought about by membership.

I would like to thank the European Parliament Liaison Office, the European Commission Representation in Ireland and Iarnrod for their initiative to bring this exciting EU cultural project alive for commuters in Ireland.”

European Commissioner Mairead McGuinness said

Today, I’m delighted to launch the wonderful “Poetry in Motion” campaign celebrating Ireland’s 50-year membership in the EU. The poems remind us of the linguistic and cultural diversity in Europe, while their creativity brings us closer together. These poems are also a great way to bring poetry from all over Europe into our everyday life.

Liz Kelly Director of Poetry Ireland has been added.

A poem in a bottle is a reminder that no poem can stand alone. It needs someone to read it. The reader must uncork the poem and discover it, allowing them to experience the intimacy of the connection, across oceans and miles. The container must be small enough for a poem to fit inside. Yet, the possibilities of the poem are endless. It can tell a joke or a story, or paint a picture. It can pass on knowledge or wisdom. Or, it could give shelter.

Poems from all over the EU can be displayed on public transport, allowing the reader to experience a real journey through the poem. Each poem relates to the theme Message in a Bottle, at a moment when citizens in Europe value more than ever the sense of community and identity embodied by EU. The poems written in languages we don’t know can give us new and exciting ideas. The Irish and English translations bring each poem full circle, allowing us to discover new poets as we go through our daily lives.

Jim Meade , CEO of Iarnrod Eireann and Jim Meade, said:

Iarnrod Eireann, in partnership with the European Parliament and European Commission, is celebrating 50 years since Ireland became a member state of the European Union. Our DART & Commuter Services will display the poems of poets from across Europe throughout the summer. I am sure our customers will love reading them while they travel.
