The Russian Embassy in Sweden declined to comment.
Since Moscow invaded Ukraine in February last year, Russia and Western countries have been expelled for the same reason. Russia calls the invasion a “special operations”.
According to a Swedish Foreign Ministry statement, five people working for the Russian Embassy in Sweden were asked to leave due to activities which are not compatible with Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations.
The ministry refused not to specify the activities involved, but said that Swedish security services reported Russia’s involvement in gathering information in Sweden.
In an email the government stated that it takes this threat to security very seriously.
The Swedish Security Service declined to comment but said they have been warning for years about Russia using diplomats to spy on Sweden.
Many countries are worried about Russian intelligence activity. Sweden’s security police identified Russia as a grave danger for the Nordic country, which is seeking NATO membership.
Norway has expelled 15 RussianEmbassies officials in the first week of February. The Norwegians viewed them as intelligence officers operating under diplomatic cover.
In April last year, Sweden expelled three Russian diplomats. Germany, The Netherlands and France expelled officials for an alleged spying one year ago.
The European Union has severe sanctions against Russia for its invasion in Ukraine. Russia is not happy with Sweden’s decision to join NATO.
