Grushko responded to a question regarding the implications of supplying the jets that Ukraine had requested from NATO countries.
Senior US officials say that although the US hasn’t yet received any commitments regarding delivery, US President Joe Biden said to G7 leaders in a meeting on Friday, 19 May, that Washington supports joint training programs for Ukrainian F-16 pilots.
“We observe that Western countries still adhere to the escalation strategy. Grushko said that it involves “colossal risk for them”.
“We have the means to reach the goals that we have set.”
Colonel Yuri Ignat, a Ukrainian Air Force spokesman, told Espreso TV that “we will be able to win this war”, once Kyiv deploys F-16s. They can provide defensive coverage in areas out of the range of anti-aircraft weapons.
We need F-16s as an integral part of air defence. The jets are capable of engaging aerial targets at both low and high altitudes, he added.
He said that by using F-16s our ground forces will be able quickly liberate the occupied Ukrainian territory, targeting enemy command post, military groups, and logistic supply chains.
