People in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv were seen running for shelter after warning sirens sounded.
Hamas said it had fired a “barrage of rockets” over both Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. In footage shared on social media, rockets could be seen in the sky above the city.
It marks the latest development in escalating tensions between Israel and Hamas. Earlier in the day, video analysed by the BBC appeared to show an air strike at the Rafah crossing on the Egyptian side of the border, where it was hoped a ceasefire could potentially take place for Gaza and foreign nationals to be evacuated.
